  • Build and support all aspects of quality assurance and food safety measures needed to protect all product lines through effective project management and scientific measurement.
  • Lead QA and food safety initiatives on designated products to include:
    • Risk assessment of proposed components including processing, handling at the supply chain center, potential store issues and customer impact.
    • Clear supplier communications to assure timely modifications, effective scale-up and compliance to specification (note – compliance to spec is a QA function that is included in RD description.  R&D does ensure the specifications of the initial product are met, QA works to ensure specifications are continued to be met).
    • Manage an effective process; assurance that supplier can uphold food safety and spec requirements, product testing to assure microbial compliance, and ongoing communications.
    • Model adherence to approval process ensuring good cross functional communication, respect of timelines, accountability for product performance.
  • Act as an authority on food safety measures with suppliers and Supply Chain centers; maintains the authority and responsibility to remove plants and/or suppliers from the supply chain without further approval from superiors.  This same power is exercised with approval of new suppliers.
  • Assist the R&D team with product development, specifically value added improvements and specification development for new products.
  • Model and mentor good project management skills for the QA team.
  • Spend significant time in the kitchen or in support of product testing, vendor verification, laboratory testing, follow-up, etc.
  • Recognize areas where products/ingredients need improvement. Authorize product changes that are associated with cost reduction initiatives to verify there is no negative effect on quality and consistency.  Coordinate activities to verify the impact of any product quality improvements, equipment changes, and process optimization on end product quality

 Evaluate and approve new/existing product components based upon individual product risk assessments, rooted in microbiology scientific measures and product quality expertise.

  • Identify, present and provide applications of food safety technologies and scientific measures that can enhance current and pipeline products within the menu.
  • Act as the expert on microbial and other food safety threats and abatement measures as well as other food safety and quality new technologies through supplier capability presentations, science publications, seminars and industry conferences.
  • Ensure compliance with FDA, USDA and other governmental regulatory requirements concerning the safety and wholesomeness of all food and packaging components.
  • Evaluate and approve shelf life extension requests.

 

Upon identification of product by R&D, lead department calendar, meet approval deadlines.

·         Lead the development and maintenance of the QA calendar of all projects for the QA/Safety Director.

·         Lead the coordination of all quality assurance timelines ensuring project adherence to approved calendar.

·         Lead identifying resource needs and develop recommendations to the QA/Safety Director on resourcing and department project prioritization.

 QUALIFICATIONS                                            

  • Bachelor degree in food science or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 4-5 years of experience in food quality assurance environment.
  • Proven history of project management and problem solving skills, including the ability to identify issues, develop solutions and lead to completion.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills across functions and organizational levels.
  • Proven ability to identify opportunities, set goals, work independently and be self-motivated.
  • HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) certification and strong knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Laboratory Practices, Standard Sanitation Operating Procedures, preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Ability to communicate with suppliers, franchisees and internal team members.
  • Travel up to 30%
  • Good Knowledge of computer skills including MS Office programs, databases, etc.

With the Quality Manager, ensures that all products meet or exceed Litehouse quality standards.  Will perform pre-shipment review of product analytical data, packaging information and CCP records.  Actively participates in the day to day supervision of quality assurance technicians, working with schedules, answering questions, troubleshooting, etc.  Takes ownership of complaint investigation, procedure development, process audits, training, floor and lab coverage, and HACCP.  Manages ingredients with short dates, works with scheduling and production to limit waste.  Manages identity preserved programs including Organic and Kosher audits.  Looks for continuous improvement opportunities.  Drives quality projects to completion.   Serves as backup to the Quality Assurance Manager in their absence. 

Required Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science preferred. 
  • 3 to 5 yrs experience and/or training or an equivalent combination of education and experience in quality leadership in food manufacturing

Product Development Food Associate

Michigan Milk Producers Association Career Opportunity

 

The Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) is a cooperative organization of independent Michigan dairy farmers. MMPA provides a wide range of technical, manufacturing, educational and administrative services to assist members with the production and management of dairy products.

MMPA maintains two plants in the state to produce dairy products from raw milk supplied by the members. The largest plant is located in Ovid (20 miles NNE of Lansing. The Ovid facility is a “balancing plant” which produces wet and dry milk and butter products for the commercial market. Some well known customers include Kraft, Yoplait and Edy’s.

The Ovid facility processes up to 5 million pounds of milk per day and operates year around on a 24/7 basis.

The plant is highly automated and is currently completing a $62 million dollar expansion to maximize throughput and optimize its statewide balancing function. An expansion of the warehouse area is currently in the planning stages.

Production Supervisor

Position: Production Supervisor

Reports to: Production Manager

Positions Supervised: Supervises a team of production, maintenance and quality assurance employees on a swing shift basis which includes rotating second and third shifts.

Primary Responsibilities:

This is a key position in the daily operations of the Ovid facility which has responsibility for all activities on assigned second and third shifts.

1. Plans and organizes available resources (employees, materials, time, equipment) to best meet shift production, quality and safety goals. Monitors and adapts plansthroughout the shift as needed. Walks the plant floor to assess employee andequipment status throughout the shift.

2. Develops, coaches and counsels employees to ensure a motivated and competent workforce on the shift. Conducts regular shift meetings on at least a monthly basis covering production updates, changed procedures and safety reviews to keep employees current on processes and procedures.

3. Works cooperatively with other production supervisors to ensure effective shift to shift transitions and to minimize disruption due to unplanned absences. This includes conducting a pre-shift briefing with the supervisor to be relieved, completing shift notes for the current shift and briefing the incoming supervisor when then the shift is done.

4. Keeps other parties within the organization informed of the status of work items. This is primarily contacts with Corporate Sales, Dispatch, QA and Maintenance.

5. Continually develops a stronger understanding of the operations of the milk balancing plant to include: equipment operations, work flow, and labor contract features.

Candidate Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have a four year college degree in Food Science or a related degree with a minimum of one year supervisory experience in a food processing plant.

Strong communications and organizational skills are required.

Basic computer skills including a working knowledge of Excel and Word.

The manufacturing environment includes industrial sized equipment situated on dairy tile or poured concrete floors, some accessed on different floors via stairs or ladders. The floors can be wet or slippery from water or caustic solutions used in cleaning. The supervisor must be able to easily and safely navigate throughout the plant on foot, this includes climbing stairs (as many as 186 at a time) or ladders and at times in very hot conditions.
